Amsterdam: Day 2
me: [reading a store sign] funky monkey! hey, you wanted a cup of tea, right? ‘cause it’s a coffee shop, and you could probably get one, there.
emma: yeah, but it’s a coffeeshop.
me: i’m sure they sell tea, as well.
emma: no. ruth. it’s a coffeeshop.
me: … oh. oh.

Bruges: Day 2
yes, behold, my first post since The Curious Incident of the Laptop in the Parisian Apartment.
i laughed, i cried, etc etc.
… mostly cried, if i’m honest… and possibly ruined that portion of the trip for my mother… but we can’t dwell on the past! i have already picked out the new laptop i’m going to buy once i return to australia, and also an expensive gift...
This is whitepajamas, here, posting on behalf of...
Obviously posts on this blog are going to be few and far between, for a while, but if you happen to have a spare laptop for sale, or the names and addresses of culprits that I can beat up in Parisian vengeance, Liam Neeson-style, please wave your outraged fists in my direction, now.

Paris: Day 2
no fewer than five people tried to shortchange us today, because they thought that since we were tourists, we wouldn’t notice.
we noticed.
BUT WE DID NOT LET THAT SPOIL OUR DAY.
we started off walking from our apartment to the bastille, and from there down to the seine. we followed the river until we reached the jardins des tuileries, which is where we stopped for lunch. i had a crepe....

Paris: Day 1
i am just back from a brief shopping expedition, and everything is going well so far! i managed to communicate fairly decently with all the shopkeepers, but need to learn the french for “sorry i’m butchering your language.”
i’m not too bad at reading french (that is to say, i can bumble along without hurting myself), but i couldn’t string a grammatically correct...

meanwhile, this trip seems to be a lesson about...
an actual conversation that took place between my mother and the wife of the man who owned our hotel in rome, over breakfast this morning:
hotel owner’s wife (h.o.w.): er… limousine? l’ora? my mother: oh, no, i’m full. h.o.w.: (confused) … cappuccino? my mother: oh! oh, si, si. thank you. h.o.w.: (confused) er… limousine? my mother: (confused)...

Rome (but not really): Day 6
still typing up the update for days 1, 2, 3 and 4. one day i will finish it. one day. probably when i get back to australia, at this rate.
day 6: pompeii!
it is kind of weird to be able to walk into a place you’ve never visited before and confidently say, “i recognise that street/wall/stone/oven/brothel. that is a very familiar street/wall/stone/oven/brothel.”
i am also...

Rome: Day 5
you may have noticed that i have not posted any updates regarding days 1, 2, 3 or 4. these are coming. i promise. it’s just taking me a while. mostly because i only have time to type it up late at night, and Late Night Ruth is also known as Overly Verbose Ruth.
onward!
day 5: the trevi fountain, part ii: the coin-throwing edition, the spanish steps and the galleria borghese and...

what a lovely evening.
we started out with dinner at our usual trattoria (yes, we’ve been here less than four days and we already have a “usual”), where the head waiter put on quite a show for us. i imagine it was all a ploy to get us to spend more money, but we had a good time, regardless. he put a great deal of effort in helping us pick out the perfect meal, and since everything he picked out for...

zwischenfischen replied to your post: i’m trying to type up a brief summary of my first three days in rome, and while i’m yet to finish writing about day one, the entry is already seven hundred and thirty words long.
have you tried tartufo yet? it’s the holy grail of desserts.
i have not, but it is now on my “list of things to do tomorrow.”
